You and the business

Sometimes you float the business from your own pocket; sometimes you pay yourself. Neither is business income or a business expense. It’s money moving between you and the business, and recording it wrong is one of the classic small-business bookkeeping mistakes. Thalermark gives it its own door so you can’t fall into it.

Find Investments & withdrawals in the account menu.

+ Record asks one question. What happened?

  • I put my own money in: you covered something from personal funds, or seeded the business account.
  • I paid myself / took money out: a draw, in plain clothes.

Then the amount, the date, which account it went into (or came out of), and an optional note.

Your dashboard balances update; your Money in / Money out, profit, and tax worksheet don’t. Exactly as it should be. The list keeps a tidy record of every investment and withdrawal, with the usual delete-and-restore safety net.

Switching to Thalermark mid-stream? Starting balances (linked from this page, and from Settings → Import & export) is three questions: when you started, money in the bank, money customers already owed you, and money you already owed.

Coming from QuickBooks, Xero, or Wave with real history? The “I have my previous balances” option accepts your full closing balances, even imported straight from a CSV export, so your numbers and your tax worksheet cover the whole year, not just the part you’ve spent here.

The accounts you pick from (checking, savings, the cash box, a credit card) live in Settings → Accounts. Add each one once, and every payment, expense, and withdrawal can say where the money actually moved.
